The Decisions Before The Purchase

Which tier, which technology, and what the numbers mean.

Most bad water purchases are not bad products — they are the right product for somebody else's problem. These guides cover the decisions that come first: which tier you need, which technology can physically do the job, and what a certification number actually promises.

Every guide here exists because it prevents a specific wasted purchase. Filters do not soften water, carbon does not remove fluoride, and an NSF/ANSI 42 certification is not a health claim — three facts that between them account for most of the money wasted in this category.

If you are not sure where to start, the tier guide gets you to a shortlist in about two minutes. If you already know your contaminant, go to the contaminant library instead.
