The short version

I am an enthusiast who is genuinely into this. I read the manuals, pull the certification listings, compile the published specifications, and do the math. No lab coat.

That is the whole credential, stated up front, because the alternative is the thing this category does constantly: a byline that implies a laboratory, a decade of experience, or a professional certification that would take three years and an exam to actually hold. I have none of those, and a reader who buys a five-hundred-dollar system on my say-so deserves to know that before they read a word of the recommendation.

What I actually do before a page gets published

The work is documentary rather than experimental, and every step of it leaves a trail you can follow:

1. Start from the certification listing, not the product page. A manufacturer can say "reduces lead" in a headline. A third-party certification listing names the standard, the specific model, and the claim that was actually tested. When those two disagree — and they disagree more often than you would hope — the listing wins and the page says so.
2. Pull the performance data sheet. Certification tells you a claim passed. The data sheet tells you the reduction percentage, contaminant by contaminant, and the influent concentration it was measured against. That is where the interesting differences between two apparently identical filters live.
3. Do the arithmetic in public. Cartridge price divided by rated capacity gives cost per gallon, and it routinely inverts the ranking that sticker price suggests. I publish the inputs, not just the answer, so you can redo it with the price in front of you today.
4. Write down who should walk past it. Every product on this site has a stated reason not to buy it. A roundup where all five picks are excellent is a roundup that has told you nothing.

What I will never write

No testing claims — no "in our testing," no "after six months of use," no lab, no bench, no owned unit standing in as evidence. No invented star ratings. No credential I do not hold: not Certified Water Specialist, not environmental engineer, not licensed plumber, not "reviewed by our expert panel." No urgency copy about what is in your water designed to move a product.

Water filtration is a health-adjacent purchase, and the fear-to-sale pipeline in this category is real. The counter to it is not reassurance — it is specificity. Naming the contaminant, the standard that addresses it, and the tier that physically can or cannot remove it does more for a nervous reader than either panic or comfort.

Where the limits are

I cannot tell you what is in your water. Nobody writing on the internet can — it depends on your utility, your service line, your plumbing and your water heater. What I can do is narrow it: the symptom pages get from what you noticed to a short list of likely causes, and the report guide gets you through the document your utility already sends you. Past that point the honest answer is a test, and I say so rather than selling around it.
