These are the questions that arrive most often, answered in the same way every page on this site answers things: directly, with the reasoning attached, and with an honest "you probably do not need to buy anything" where that is the truth. Where a question deserves more than a paragraph there is a link to the page that gives it one.

If you are starting from scratch, the symptom triage is the fastest route in — start from what you noticed rather than from a product category.

The questions

Do I actually need a water filter?

Often not, and that is a legitimate answer. If your water tastes fine, your utility's annual report shows no violations, and your home has no lead service line or lead solder, a filter buys you taste improvement rather than safety. The cases where filtration genuinely matters are a known contaminant above a limit, a lead-era plumbing risk, private well water, or a taste or odor problem you want gone. Everything else is preference, which is fine as long as it is priced as preference.

How do I find out what is in my tap water?

If you are on municipal water, your utility publishes a Consumer Confidence Report every year showing detected contaminants against regulatory limits. It is free and it covers what left the treatment plant. It does not cover what your own service line and household plumbing added, which is exactly where lead comes from — for that you need a tap sample. A certified laboratory test of your own tap runs roughly 100 to 250 dollars depending on the panel. Private well owners get no report at all and testing is the only option.

Which filter tier do I need: pitcher, under-sink, or whole-house?

It is decided by the contaminant and where the problem shows up, not by budget. If the problem is only at the drinking tap and only involves taste, chlorine or a certified drinking-water contaminant, a pitcher or countertop unit handles it. If you want higher capacity, a plumbed connection or reverse osmosis, go under-sink. If the problem appears in the shower, the laundry, the water heater or across every tap in the house, it has to be treated where the water enters the building, which means whole-house.

Will a water filter soften hard water?

No. Filtration and softening are different processes solving different problems. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium; removing it requires ion exchange, which is what a water softener does, or reverse osmosis at a single tap. A carbon filter does not touch hardness — the scale keeps forming on the kettle element and in the water heater. Salt-free conditioners do not remove hardness either; they alter how the minerals crystallize so they are less likely to adhere, which is a different and more modest claim.

Do water filter pitchers remove lead?

Some do and most do not. Removing lead requires certification to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction specifically, and standard carbon pitchers are typically certified only to NSF/ANSI 42, which covers taste, odor and chlorine — an aesthetic standard, not a health one. Check the specific model number against the certifier's own listing rather than the packaging, because a brand can hold a lead certification on one model and not on the one you are holding.

What is the difference between NSF/ANSI 42 and 53?

Standard 42 is aesthetic: taste, odor, chlorine, and particulate. It makes no health claim. Standard 53 is health-related and covers contaminants with a health effect, including lead, cysts, VOCs, chromium and certain other metals. A filter certified to 42 alone has been verified to make water taste better and nothing more. This distinction is the single most common misunderstanding in the category, and manufacturers are not always eager to clarify it.

Do any filters remove PFAS?

Yes, but you have to look for it specifically. NSF/ANSI 53 covers PFOA and PFOS reduction, and NSF/ANSI P473 addresses them at concentrations relevant to the EPA limits set in 2024. Reverse osmosis is generally effective against PFAS, and certain certified carbon block filters are as well. A generic carbon pitcher with no PFAS-specific certification should be assumed not to remove them, and manufacturer performance data sheets in this area have been revised recently, so check the date on whatever you are reading.

Is reverse osmosis worth it?

It is worth it when you need the breadth of reduction it provides — arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, dissolved solids and PFAS among others — and can accept its costs. Those costs are real: it wastes water in producing it, it is slower than a filter, it needs a plumbed connection and usually a tank, and it strips beneficial minerals along with everything else, which is why remineralizing stages exist. For a chlorine taste problem it is comprehensively over-specified.

How often do I have to change the filter?

Follow the manufacturer's rated capacity in gallons rather than the calendar, then convert it to your household's usage. A pitcher cartridge rated for 40 gallons in a home drinking 3 gallons a day is a two-week filter, not a two-month one, whatever the box says. Running a cartridge past its rated capacity does not just stop the reduction — a saturated carbon bed can release captured contaminants back into the water.

Why does my water smell like rotten eggs?

Hydrogen sulfide, and the useful diagnostic is whether it comes from the hot tap only or from both. Hot-only usually means the magnesium anode rod in the water heater is reacting with sulfate-reducing bacteria, which is a water heater problem rather than a filtration problem. Both taps means it is in the supply, which is common on private wells and generally calls for oxidation and filtration at the point of entry.

Why is there orange or brown staining in my sinks?

Almost always iron. Dissolved ferrous iron is clear at the tap and turns orange once it meets air, which is why the stain appears in the fixture rather than in the glass. It is an aesthetic and laundry problem rather than a health one at typical concentrations. Removing it means oxidation followed by filtration at the point of entry, and a drinking-water filter will not stop the staining because the staining is happening everywhere else in the house.

Does boiling water make it safe?

Boiling kills bacteria, viruses and parasites, which is why boil-water notices exist. It does nothing about lead, PFAS, nitrates, arsenic or any other dissolved chemical contaminant — and because boiling evaporates water while leaving the contaminant behind, it slightly concentrates them. Boiling is a microbiological measure only.

Is bottled water safer than filtered tap water?

Not inherently. Bottled water is regulated by the FDA rather than the EPA, and a significant share of it is treated municipal tap water. It costs orders of magnitude more per gallon than any filter on this site, and it carries a packaging cost that filtration does not. Where a tap has a specific known contaminant and no filter has been fitted yet, bottled water is a reasonable interim measure rather than a permanent answer.

Do you test the filters you recommend?

No, and we say so on every relevant page. There is no laboratory here, no test bench, and no rack of units in service. What we do instead is read the third-party certification listings, pull manufacturer performance data sheets, cite the primary EPA and NSF sources, and compute cost per gallon from published figures with the arithmetic shown. You can check every one of those claims yourself, which is not true of most testing claims in this category.

Why do some of your buy buttons not show a price?

Because we only display a price we have verified today. Where a live price is available it appears inside the button with the date it was checked; where it is not, the button reads 'Check price' and shows no number. A remembered or stale price is a small lie that costs a reader real money, and the retailer's page is always the authority on what something currently costs.

Do carbon filters remove fluoride?

No. Standard activated carbon does not reduce fluoride to any meaningful degree, regardless of what a product page implies. The routes that work are reverse osmosis, activated alumina, or bone char media. If fluoride removal is your objective, check for that specific claim on a certification listing rather than assuming a good carbon filter covers it.

How much should a whole-house system cost to run?

The purchase price is the smaller half of the answer. The number that matters is cost per gallon over the life of the media, which is cartridge or media price divided by rated capacity, plus any salt, power or drain water. A cheap system with expensive short-life cartridges routinely costs more over five years than a more expensive one with a long-life tank. My well water tested fine last year. Do I need to retest?

Yes. Private wells are unregulated and untested by anyone but the owner, and well water changes with rainfall, agricultural activity, septic conditions and seasonal water table movement. Annual testing for coliform bacteria and nitrate is the standard recommendation, with a broader panel every few years or after any change in taste, smell, clarity or nearby land use.

What should I do first if I have just moved in?

Two free things before you spend anything. Look up the utility's most recent annual water quality report for the address, and find out the age of the house and whether it has a lead service line — many utilities now publish service line material maps. Those two answers eliminate most of the guesswork, and only then does buying a filter become a decision with actual information behind it.
