Read the certification before anything else
The most consequential fact in this tier is that most whole-house systems are certified to NSF/ANSI 42 — the aesthetic-effects standard covering taste, odor and chlorine. It is a genuine certification and it is not a health claim.
The Aquasana Rhino EQ-1000 is certified by NSF International to NSF/ANSI 42, with the tank certified to NSF/ANSI 61 for material safety. That is exactly what it says it is. Reading "NSF certified" as "removes everything" is the most expensive mistake in this tier, because it is how a four-figure purchase ends up not solving the lead problem it was bought for.

The honest question is not which is better. It is whether an annual cartridge change is realistically going to happen in your house. A cartridge system whose filters are three years overdue is worse than no system, because loaded media restricts flow and can shed what it captured. A tank system asks nothing of you for a decade.
Chloramine changes the shortlist
Many utilities use chloramine rather than free chlorine because it persists longer in the distribution network. Standard activated carbon removes it poorly. Catalytic carbon removes it properly.

The cost-per-gallon math
The comparison worth running is ten years, because that is the media life of a tank system and the point at which cartridge costs have accumulated.
A tank system: purchase, plus installation, plus a pre-filter a few times a year, for ten years. A cartridge system: a much lower purchase, plus a full set of two or three large cartridges annually, for ten years — so ten sets.
Price a cartridge set locally, multiply by ten, add the purchase price, and set that against the tank system total. The gap is usually smaller than the sticker prices suggest, and the tank system also removes ten Saturdays of wet cartridge changes from your life. Run it with the prices in front of you.

Do whole-house filters remove lead?
Not reliably, and usually not at all in the sense people mean. Lead enters from the service line and household solder, which sit downstream of a point-of-entry system. Most whole-house filters are also certified to NSF/ANSI 42, which is an aesthetic standard. Lead is a point-of-use job.
How long does a whole-house filter last?
Tank systems are commonly rated at 1,000,000 gallons or about ten years. Cartridge systems are typically rated at 100,000 gallons, roughly a year for a family of four. Compare rated gallons rather than advertised years, because the years assume a household size.
Will it reduce my water pressure?
Some pressure drop is inherent, and it grows as media loads. Systems publish a service flow rate — 7 to 9 gpm on the tanks here, 15 gpm peak on the cartridge system. Staying within it keeps the drop unnoticeable; undersizing for your number of bathrooms is the usual cause of a complaint.
Do I still need an under-sink filter as well?
For a health contaminant, yes. The common and sensible setup is point-of-entry carbon for the whole house plus a certified point-of-use system at the kitchen tap. They are doing different jobs at different certification levels.
