What you give up
Filter life goes to everything. This is the real trade. Every gallon your cold tap delivers passes through the filter — rinsing dishes, filling the kettle, filling a pot, washing vegetables. A dedicated-faucet system filters only what you choose to filter, so its rated capacity stretches much further in real time.
The 24,000-gallon rating absorbs a lot of that, which is why the format works at all. But a household that runs the cold tap heavily will not see three years.
Certification level. This is the one that matters most. The 17 series is certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine reduction and 372 for lead-free materials. NSF/ANSI 42 is an aesthetic standard — taste and odor. It is not a health claim, and it is not a lead claim.
Variants exist with broader certification, and Waterdrop lists the 17UB and 17UA separately. Verify the specific model's listing before buying if you are relying on a health claim.
No reverse osmosis. RO needs a drain connection and produces at a rate that requires either a tank or a pump, so the direct-connect format is carbon only. Fluoride, nitrate and arsenic are out of reach here.
Check for a spare hole first
Before concluding you cannot have a dedicated faucet, look at your sink. Many have a fourth hole under a blanking cap, or a soap dispenser nobody has ever refilled, or a side-sprayer that was replaced by a pull-down faucet years ago.
Any of those is a free faucet mount, and it opens up the whole certified under-sink tier including reverse osmosis. It is worth two minutes of looking.
Installing one
- Turn off the cold supply at the angle stop under the sink.
- Open the tap to relieve pressure.
- Disconnect the cold supply line from the faucet tailpiece.
- Fit the filter inline using the supplied quick-connect fittings.
- Turn the supply back on, check every joint, and flush the filter per the instructions.
About an hour for a first-timer. The only genuine risks are cross-threading a fitting and not flushing enough — new carbon sheds fines and the first few gallons will run gray.
The cost-per-gallon math
At 24,000 rated gallons, this format has by far the best cost per gallon in the under-sink tier — on paper.
The honest correction is that you are filtering water you do not drink. If your household runs 40 gallons a day through the cold tap and drinks two of them, the filter is doing twenty times the work per useful gallon. Divide the cartridge price by 24,000 for the paper figure, then divide by the fraction you actually drink for the real one.
Even after that correction it usually beats a pitcher comfortably. It just does not beat a dedicated-faucet system on capacity alone, which is what the headline number implies.
