Read it as a rule: if your contaminant appears only in the right-hand column, no carbon block will help you regardless of price or certification breadth. Fluoride is the case people get wrong most often.
The reverse also holds. If your concerns are chlorine and lead, a certified carbon block does the job with no wastewater, no tank, an easier install and minerals left in the water. Buying RO for that is over-engineering with a running cost.

Tankless versus tank
The Waterdrop G3P800 is tankless: it produces on demand at 800 GPD rather than filling a pressure tank. That removes the biggest practical objection to under-sink RO, which is that a 4-gallon tank plus housing consumes most of a cabinet. It also publishes a 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio, considerably better than conventional tank systems.
What it costs you is a power outlet under the sink. Tankless systems are pumped, and older kitchens frequently have no outlet in the cabinet. That is a hard stop, not an inconvenience — check before ordering.
Tank systems like the APEC and the iSpring need no electricity and cost less, and they ask for the space. The APEC's tank alone is roughly 11 by 11 by 15 inches on top of a 15.5 by 5.25 by 17.5 inch housing.

The cost-per-gallon math
Under-sink running cost is dominated by cartridge type, and the range is enormous.
The Aquasana Claryum cartridge set is rated at 800 gallons — about six months. The Waterdrop 17UA inline cartridge is rated at 24,000 gallons — about three years. That is a factor of thirty, and the cartridge prices are nothing like a factor of thirty apart.
The other lever is proprietary versus standard. The APEC uses ordinary 10-inch cartridges available from many manufacturers; Waterdrop and Aquasana use proprietary ones, which means their pricing is the only pricing. Over ten years that difference frequently exceeds the purchase price gap between the systems.

Do I need reverse osmosis or is carbon enough?
Carbon block is enough for chlorine, taste, lead, VOCs and cysts, provided it is certified to NSF/ANSI 53. You need reverse osmosis for fluoride, nitrate, arsenic and total dissolved solids, because carbon does not remove any of those at any price.
How much space does an under-sink system need?
A carbon block system is compact — roughly the size of a few soda bottles. A tank RO system needs the housing plus a tank around 11 by 11 by 15 inches. Tankless RO sits in between and needs a power outlet. Measure your cabinet before ordering; this is the most common cause of a return.
Will I have to drill my countertop?
For anything with a dedicated faucet, yes, unless your sink has a spare hole under a blanking cap or a redundant soap dispenser. Direct-connect systems such as the Waterdrop 17UA avoid it entirely by plumbing into the line feeding your existing faucet.
