Brita sells two pitcher filters that fit the same pitcher. The Standard is certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for taste and odor. The Elite is certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, and the 53 covers lead. Neither is certified for PFOA, PFOS or fluoride.

The only thing you really need to know

Brita sells two pitcher filters. They fit the same pitchers, sit next to each other on the shelf, differ by a few dollars, and are certified completely differently.

If you bought a Brita because you were worried about lead and there is a white filter in it, you do not have a lead filter. That is the single most common mismatch in home water filtration and it costs a few dollars to fix.

Why the Standard filter is hard to justify at all

Set aside the certification for a moment. The Elite is rated for 120 gallons; the Standard for 40. At a small price premium, the Elite is cheaper per gallon — so it wins on running cost even for somebody who does not care about lead.

Add the lead certification back in and there is very little argument for the white filter in 2026.

What Brita is genuinely good at

  • Availability. Filters are in every supermarket, which matters more than enthusiasts admit — a filter you can buy on the way home is a filter that gets changed.
  • Price. The Elite is the lowest-cost route to an NSF/ANSI 53 lead certification anywhere on this site.
  • Fit. Millions of households already own the pitcher. Upgrading the filter is the cheapest meaningful water improvement available to most people.

What Brita does not do

The cost-per-gallon math

A household drinking two gallons a day uses about 730 gallons a year.

At 120 rated gallons, the Elite needs about six filters a year. At 40 rated gallons, the Standard needs about eighteen. Multiply each by the shelf price on the day and the Elite usually comes out ahead — before you count the lead certification, which the Standard does not have at any price.

The cheapest route to an NSF/ANSI 53 lead certification. It drops into a pitcher most households already have, and it is emphatically not the same filter as the white Brita Standard.

Certification status

Certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401. The lead certification belongs to the Elite (blue) filter only — the Standard (white) filter is certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for taste and odor and is not certified for lead. Per Brita's January 2026 performance data sheet the Elite is not certified for PFOA or PFOS, and no Brita pitcher filter is certified for fluoride.

Skip it if

Anyone on hard, high-TDS water who will not tolerate changing a filter every few weeks. On 400+ ppm supply the running cost is genuinely painful and an under-sink system is cheaper inside a year.

If you need fluoride

Questions people actually ask

Which Brita filter should I buy?

The Elite, in almost every case. It carries a lead certification the Standard does not, and at 120 rated gallons against 40 it is cheaper per gallon despite the higher price per filter.

Do Brita filters remove lead?

The Elite is certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead. The Standard is not — it is certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for taste and odor. Since both fit the same pitcher, which filter you have is the entire answer.

Are Brita filters worth it?

The Elite is, on both cost per gallon and certification. It is the lowest-cost route to a genuine NSF/ANSI 53 lead certification available. The Standard is harder to justify once you notice it is also more expensive per gallon.

Why is my Brita slow?

Usually because the filter was not soaked before first use, leaving trapped air that makes water channel rather than flow through the media. Gradual slowing over weeks is normal loading and means the filter is nearing the end of its rated life.
