This is not a hedge. It is the difference between equipment that works for a decade and equipment that fails inside a year, and it is the single most common well-water mistake we see. How to test properly.

Air injection versus cartridge, honestly
Air injection oxidation pulls in an air pocket, oxidizes iron and sulfide as water passes through it, traps the resulting particles in a media bed, and backwashes them to drain automatically. No consumables at all, and the highest ceilings available. It needs a drain, which is the constraint that decides whether it is possible in your basement.
Cartridge systems cost a fraction, need no drain, and ask for two or three heavy wet cartridge changes roughly annually. Their ceilings are much lower and their capacity falls as concentration rises — the iSpring is rated 100,000 gallons generally and 50,000 at the top of its iron range.

The Home Master's quiet advantage
Cartridge systems have a reputation for killing well-water pressure, and it is deserved on axial-flow designs. The Home Master uses radial flow — water moves through the media sideways rather than end to end — and publishes a pressure drop under 1 psi.
On a well with a pressure tank cycling between 40 and 60 psi, that matters. It also works down to 20 psi feed pressure, lower than most competitors, which suits older or marginal well systems.
Sequence, if you need more than one thing
- Sediment — grit, before anything else
- Neutralizer — only if pH is below about 6.8; oxidation is pH-dependent

- UV — last, because it needs clear water to work at all
Getting this order wrong is invisible until a component fails early. It is the one place where a water-treatment professional reliably earns their fee.
What none of these do
- Bacteria. That is a UV job, after these systems. See UV treatment.
- Nitrate. Filtration does not remove it. Reverse osmosis at the drinking tap does.
- Hardness. A softener, after the iron stage.
- Arsenic. Reverse osmosis under NSF/ANSI 58, or a specialist adsorptive media.
The cost-per-gallon math
The ten-year comparison flips the obvious answer.
A cartridge system costs a fraction up front and then consumes a set of two or three large cartridges every year, forever. An air-injection system costs several times more and consumes nothing but the water it backwashes and the electricity for its valve.
Price a cartridge set locally, multiply by ten, add the purchase price, and set that against the air-injection total. On a well with real iron, air injection frequently wins on money as well as capability — and it certainly wins on the ten Saturdays you get back.

Do I need a water softener as well as an iron filter?
