Filter life is the whole argument
120 rated gallons against 40. At two gallons a day that is roughly six filters a year versus eighteen — and unless PUR's price per filter is under a third of Brita's on the day you shop, the Elite is cheaper to run.
It also means fewer trips, fewer forgotten changes, and less chance of drinking through an exhausted filter, which is the real-world failure mode nobody plans for.
Where PUR has a genuine edge
- Pitcher capacity. The PLUS pitcher is 11 cups against Brita's common 10, which matters if you are filling it repeatedly.
- Availability. Both are everywhere, and whichever is in stock and on promotion is a legitimate reason to choose it. They reach the same certification.
- Taste preference. Genuinely subjective, and people do have consistent preferences between the two. Neither is objectively better.
The Brita trap that does not apply to PUR the same way
Brita sells two filters that fit the same pitcher and are certified completely differently — the blue Elite is a lead filter and the white Standard is not. That is the single most common mismatch in home water filtration.
PUR's lead-reducing filter is more clearly labeled as such, so the trap is less likely. But check the filter you are actually buying in either brand, because both sell basic and lead-reducing options. Full detail on the Brita filters.
Pre-soaking, which affects PUR more
Both brands ask you to soak the filter before first use, and PUR owners report slow-flow problems more frequently when it is skipped. The mechanism is the same in both: a dry filter has trapped air, water channels around the media instead of through it, and flow suffers.
Ten minutes of soaking prevents a fortnight of irritation.
Where neither is enough

The cost-per-gallon math
At two gallons a day, a household uses about 730 gallons a year.
Brita Elite at 120 rated gallons: about six filters. PUR PLUS at 40: about eighteen.
For PUR to be cheaper annually, its price per filter would need to be roughly a third of the Elite's. Occasionally a promotion gets close; usually it does not. Check both prices, do the division, and buy the winner — the certification is identical either way, which is the reassuring part.
