The three tiers of PFAS claim
Filters sort into three groups on PFAS, and marketing works hard to blur the boundaries.
- Certified for PFOA/PFOS. A listing body verified the claim against NSF/ANSI 53, 58 or the P473 protocol, and keeps verifying it. This is the strongest evidence available to a consumer.
- Independently tested to those standards. A laboratory ran the standard's method and the manufacturer published the result. Real evidence, weaker than certification because nobody is maintaining a listing.
- No PFAS claim. Includes several extremely popular filters. Not a criticism — they are certified for other things and do those things well.

Why reverse osmosis is the strongest answer
RO works by size exclusion rather than adsorption. Water is pushed through a semipermeable membrane and dissolved contaminants are rejected on the basis of size and charge, so a membrane does not saturate with PFAS the way carbon eventually does. It also handles fluoride, nitrate and arsenic in the same pass, which carbon cannot.
The costs are honest ones: some water goes to the drain, the flow is slower, it needs a cabinet or a counter, and it strips minerals unless remineralized. If PFAS is your confirmed problem and you can install, RO is the answer.
If you cannot install anything
Countertop RO is the strongest no-installation option that exists, and the AquaTru Classic is the certified example — including P473, the protocol written specifically for PFOA and PFOS. It costs counter space and a wait, and for a renter with a confirmed PFAS problem it is frequently the only honest answer.
The certified-pitcher route is cheaper and narrower. ZeroWater's 5-stage filter is IAPMO-certified against NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS with a published 99% reduction, and its weakness is filter life — around 15 to 20 rated gallons, less on high-TDS water. On hard supply, that is a filter change every couple of weeks.
The cost-per-gallon math
PFAS is where cost per gallon diverges most sharply between tiers, because the pitcher with the certification is also the pitcher with the shortest life.
ZeroWater's filter is rated at roughly 15 to 20 gallons. A reverse osmosis membrane is typically rated in years rather than gallons, with pre-filters changed every six to twelve months. Divide the annual filter spend of each by the gallons you actually drink, and the RO system usually wins within the first year for a household of three or more — while the pitcher stays cheaper for a single person drinking modestly.

Questions people actually ask
Is a PFAS filter worth buying if my utility has not published results?
It depends on your proximity to a known source. Near a military base, airport or industrial discharge with a history of fluorinated foam or PFAS use, acting ahead of the data is reasonable. Without that, a PFAS-specific lab test costs less than most of these systems and tells you whether you need one.
Does a whole-house filter handle PFAS?
Most whole-house systems are certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for aesthetic effects and make no PFAS claim. Point-of-entry PFAS treatment exists but is a specialist product. For drinking water, a certified point-of-use system is more reliable and far cheaper.
How long does a PFAS filter last before it stops working?
Carbon-based PFAS filters have a rated capacity in gallons and lose effectiveness past it, which is why the rated figure is part of the certification. Reverse osmosis membranes degrade more gradually and are usually replaced on a multi-year schedule, with pre-filters changed far more often.
Is 'tested to NSF standards' good enough for PFAS?
It is real evidence and it is weaker than certification. A test is a snapshot; a certification is a maintained listing with ongoing surveillance. For a contaminant regulated at 4 parts per trillion, we would take the certified product if the choice is otherwise close.
