Is My Tap Water Safe?

Regulated is not the same as clean. Here is how to actually check.

For most Americans on a public supply, tap water meets federal standards and is safe to drink. Two things that regulation does not cover decide the rest: lead entering from your own pipes after the utility's last sample point, and contaminants with no federal limit at all.

Start with the honest baseline

Public water systems in the United States are regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, sample continuously, and publish results annually. For most people on a public supply, the water is safe to drink and always was. We are not going to pretend otherwise in order to sell filters.

But "meets federal standards" is a narrower claim than most people hear. It means: the contaminants the EPA has set limits for were, at the utility's sampling points, below those limits. Four things sit outside that sentence, and they are where the real answer lives.

1. Your pipes are not the utility's pipes

This is the big one. Lead almost never arrives from the treatment plant. It enters from the lead service line connecting the main to your house, or from lead solder used in household plumbing before the 1986 ban, or from brass fixtures. All of that is downstream of where the utility samples.

So a utility can be in full compliance while a specific house has a genuine lead problem. Age is the strongest signal: if your home predates 1986, lead solder is plausible, and if it predates the 1950s a lead service line is plausible. 2. Some contaminants have no federal limit

The EPA finalized the first national PFAS drinking water standards on 26 April 2024, setting maximum contaminant levels of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS. Initial monitoring is required by 26 April 2027, and on 18 May 2026 the EPA proposed extending the compliance deadline to April 2031 while keeping the 4.0 ppt levels intact.

Read that timeline carefully, because it is the honest answer to "is PFAS in my water?": for most systems, nobody has finished measuring yet. The PFAS page covers what that means for a household today. Other compounds — microplastics, many pharmaceutical residues, 1,4-dioxane — have no enforceable federal limit at all, so they will not appear in your report as a violation because there is nothing to violate.

3. A violation may have happened between reports

Annual reports are annual. Boil-water notices, main breaks and temporary exceedances happen between them. Utilities are required to notify you, but notification reaches the address on the account, which is not always the person drinking the water — renters especially.

4. Taste tells you almost nothing

The contaminants that carry real health weight are the ones you cannot detect: lead, PFAS, nitrate, arsenic, radon. All tasteless, odorless and colorless at the concentrations that matter. Meanwhile the things you can taste — chlorine, hardness, sulfur, iron — are largely aesthetic.

This inversion is the most useful thing on this page. Water that tastes fine can carry a problem; water that tastes terrible is usually harmless. Trusting your senses gets it backwards in both directions.

How to actually check, in order

  1. Read your Consumer Confidence Report. Free, published every year by your utility, and it tells you what was detected and at what level. How to read one.
  2. Find out what your pipes are made of. Home age, service line inventory if your utility publishes one, and a look at the pipe where it enters the house.
  3. Test at your own tap for lead if the home predates 1986. This is the gap the report cannot close.
  4. Check whether your utility has PFAS results published yet. Many do not, and that is expected given the monitoring timeline above.

If you are on a private well, none of this applies — nobody is testing or reporting on your water at all. Go to the well hub, where the first purchase is a lab test.

Where we land

Most people reading this do not have a dangerous water supply. Some do, and the ones who do largely cannot tell by tasting it. The purpose of this site is not to convince you that you are in danger — it is to get you from "I am not sure" to a specific answer, and then to the specific product that addresses it, if any.

Questions people actually ask

Is bottled water safer than tap water?

Not inherently. Bottled water is regulated by the FDA as a food product rather than as a public water supply, with different testing and reporting requirements, and a substantial share of it is municipal tap water that has been treated and packaged. A filter certified for your specific contaminant gives you a documented performance claim; a bottle usually does not.

How do I get my water tested for free?

Many utilities offer free lead testing to customers, and some state and county health departments run free or subsidized programs, especially for private wells. Free testing offered by a company that also sells water treatment equipment is a sales tool, and it usually measures hardness and total dissolved solids rather than anything health-related.

If my water is regulated, why would I need a filter at all?

Three legitimate reasons: lead entering from your own plumbing downstream of every utility sample, contaminants with no enforceable federal limit yet, and taste. The first two are health reasons and the third is a preference. All three are valid; they just call for different products.

Does a boil-water notice mean my filter will protect me?

No. Boil-water notices are issued for microbiological risk, and standard carbon filters are not certified to remove bacteria or viruses. Follow the notice and boil. Only systems specifically certified for microbiological purification change that answer.
