Lead is not in the water your utility treats. It dissolves into the water on the way to your tap, from a lead service line, from pre-1986 solder, or from brass fixtures. That is why a fully compliant utility and a house with a lead problem are entirely compatible facts.
The mechanism, which changes everything else
Almost every other contaminant on this site arrives with the water. Lead does not. Water leaves the treatment plant essentially lead-free and picks it up on the journey to your glass, from three sources:
- The lead service line — the pipe connecting the water main in the street to your house. Common in homes built before the 1950s, and the largest single source where one exists.
- Lead solder in household plumbing. Lead solder was legal in the US until the 1986 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. A home built or replumbed before then can have lead-bearing joints throughout.
- Brass fixtures and valves. "Lead-free" brass was permitted to contain up to 8% lead until 2014, when the limit dropped to a weighted average of 0.25%.
All three are downstream of every sample the utility takes. That is the whole reason this page exists: your annual water quality report cannot tell you about your own lead risk, and reading it as reassurance on lead is a mistake.
Corrosion control, and why it can fail
Utilities with known lead service lines add corrosion-control chemistry — typically orthophosphate — that forms a protective scale on the inside of the pipe, keeping the lead out of the water. It works, and it is fragile. Changing the source water, changing the disinfectant, or physically disturbing the line can break down that scale and release lead that had been safely locked away for years.
Practical consequence: lead levels can spike after work is done on your service line, including a partial replacement. If your street has been dug up, that is a reason to test, not a reason to relax.

There is no safe level of lead exposure, and the effects fall hardest on children and during pregnancy. That is the reason to test rather than assume, and it is also the reason not to panic: testing costs a fraction of the equipment, and the answer is often reassuring. What removes it, and the trap
Lead is well handled by certified point-of-use filtration, and NSF/ANSI 53 is the standard that covers it. Reverse osmosis under NSF/ANSI 58 covers it too.
The trap is that certification is per-filter, not per-brand, and two filters that fit the same pitcher can differ completely. The Brita Elite is certified for lead; the Brita Standard is not. They cost a few dollars apart and sit next to each other on the shelf.
The other trap is tier. A whole-house filter is the wrong tool for lead, because it sits at the point of entry — upstream of the service line problem in some configurations, and always upstream of your household solder and fixtures. Filtering at the main and then running the water through lead-bearing pipe achieves very little. Lead is a point-of-use job.

What to do today, before any filter arrives
- Run the cold tap for 30 seconds to two minutes before drinking or cooking if the water has been sitting. Contact time drives lead concentration.
- Never cook with or make formula from the hot tap. Hot water dissolves more lead, and boiling it concentrates rather than removes it.
- Clean your aerators. Lead particles collect in the screen and then release into the water.
Questions people actually ask
Does boiling water remove lead?
No — it makes it worse. Lead does not evaporate, so boiling removes water and leaves the lead behind at a higher concentration. Boiling is for microbiological risk only.
Can I see or taste lead in water?
No. Lead is colorless, odorless and tasteless at every concentration that matters. This is precisely why testing exists and why 'my water tastes fine' is not evidence of anything.
Does a Brita filter remove lead?
